What eight studies tell us about learning a skill

We read the research on video feedback and motor learning, then built Practice Tape around what it found. Each finding is paired with the part of the app it shaped.

The research

Video feedback on its own reliably improves athletic and motor skills across many sports, with no specialized equipment.

Your phone is the equipment

Record at practice, in the backyard, or on the sideline at a meet or tournament. No sensors and no tripod: install the app from our website and start filming.

The research

A picture-based breakdown of the skill, plus scoring, lets learners improve form without a live instructor at every session.

See the fix, frame by frame

Every report breaks the clip into still frames, flags the moments worth seeing, and rates stances, power, balance, focus and rhythm, so your athlete knows what to change before the next class.

The research

Corrective feedback beats praise for learning a skill, and about half of learners prefer it.

Specific fixes, not empty praise

Each report names one or two corrections, what's causing them, and a short cue to call out. Praise is there too, but it's specific and never replaces the fix.

The research

Non-experts trained to give video feedback get the same results as professional coaches on skills like lifting form.

You don't have to be a coach

Practice Tape tells you what to watch for, what to say and which drill to run, so the feedback you give at home matches what your instructor teaches.

The research

Early on, letting about half of attempts fail builds skill faster than keeping success above 80 percent.

“Not yet” is progress

Every fix becomes a goal, checked on the next video as not yet, getting there or got it. A miss is a step on the way, and a new goal comes in once one is mastered.

More reps, better reps

Your instructor sees your athlete a few hours a week. Practice Tape makes the other hours count.

How it works

Three steps, about a minute

  1. Step 1

    Film it

Pick your sport and the skill you filmed — a jump shot, a serve, a swim stroke, a form, whatever it is. The app tells you where to stand and how much to film for that sport.

  2. Step 2

    Mark the routine

Drag two sliders to the start and end. The app finds the key moments — the position that matters in each rep — and keeps up to 32 still frames. Only those stills are sent for feedback.

  3. Step 3

    Get the notes

The fixes that matter, a drill for home, a sentence to say to your athlete, a scorecard, and a check on last session's goals — plus an estimated judge's card for martial arts.

For competitors

Coaching written for your sport

Every report is written for your athlete's sport and skill, with the checkpoints a coach in that sport looks for. Martial artists also choose their organization once and get an estimated judge's card on that scale — WT, ITF, WKF, ATA and open circuits — so the number means something on tournament day.

What parents say

“I love being able to see exactly what my son needs to work on. Before, I would tell him to practice his forms, but I didn’t know what to correct. The short drills and simple coaching tips make practicing at home much easier.”
Parent of a 9-year-old Taekwondo student
“The frame-by-frame feedback is my favorite feature. My daughter can actually see where her stance or balance needs improvement instead of just hearing me say something looks wrong.”
Parent of a competitive karate athlete
“Being able to track both kids in one family plan is really helpful. I especially like that the app remembers what they worked on last time, so we can see whether they’re improving.”
Parent of two martial arts students
“The estimated judging scores are useful for setting goals before competitions. I understand they aren’t official scores, but they give us another way to measure progress.”
Parent preparing for tournaments

How does the free trial work?

You start a 14-day free trial with every Competitor feature. At sign-up you pick Family or Competitor and add a card, but nothing is charged during the trial. On day 15 it continues as the plan you picked unless you cancel or switch first, and you can cancel anytime from your account.

Does it replace our instructor?

No. It's practice between classes. Every report says your instructor has the final word, and Competitor families can send each report to their instructor as a file.

Where does the video go?

Nowhere. It stays on your phone. Only the key still frames are sent, after you tick a guardian consent box, and reports are private to your account.

Is there an app to download?

Yes, from our website. It isn't in the App Store or Google Play. Visit the Practice Tape website on your phone and install it: on Android, tap Install; on iPhone, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens like any other app.

Which sports does it cover?

Practice Tape started with martial arts — Taekwondo, karate, kung fu and wushu, and hapkido, with forms, weapons, sparring and an organization-matched judge’s card. It now coaches skills in many more sports, including basketball, soccer, baseball and softball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, track and field, gymnastics, football, hockey, and more. You pick the sport and skill when you add your athlete, and the notes are written for that sport.
